Begin your walking tour at Shugakuin Station on the Eizan Railway. With your local guide, walk through residential streets and the foothills of northern Kyoto while discovering shrines, temple gardens, samurai history, and local food culture.  Your first stop is Saginomori Shrine, a historic shrine surrounded by greenery. Its long approach is especially beautiful in autumn, when the trees turn shades of red and gold. The peaceful atmosphere makes it a pleasant contrast to Kyoto’s more crowded sightseeing areas.  Next, continue to Enkoji Temple. Founded by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1601, Enkoji was originally established not only as a temple but also as a place of learning. Today, it is known for its refined gardens, moss, bamboo, and suikinkutsu water feature, and is particularly attractive during the autumn foliage season.  Behind the temple, on the wooded hillside, stands a small Toshogu Shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. According to Enkoji Temple, a grave beside the shrine contains teeth of Ieyasu that were interred here in accordance with his wishes. This unusual story gives the temple a direct and memorable connection to the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate.  After leaving Enkoji, walk to Ichijoji Sagarimatsu, a place associated with one of the most famous stories about the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. According to tradition, Musashi fought members of the Yoshioka school here in the early Edo period. Your guide will explain the story and why this location became part of Musashi legend.  The tour finishes in Ichijoji, an area well known in Kyoto for its ramen shops.
