Kyoto: Gion Evening Walking Tour through Geisha District

1 hour and 30 minutes

Easy

Discover the historic streets of Gion on a guided walking tour. Admire the Yasaka Shrine, see the iconic Yasaka Pagoda, and explore Hanamikoji Street, the center of geisha culture in Kyoto.

Begin your walking tour at Yasaka Shrine, the heart of the famous Gion Matsuri festival held in July. Admire the white paper lanterns hanging around the stage in front of the shrine. At night, these lanterns are illuminated, casting a magical glow over the grounds.

Next, head to Maruyama Koen, Kyoto’s oldest public park, known for its seasonal Hanami (flower viewing) parties. Continue to Nene-no-Michi, named after Nene, the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Visit Kodai-ji Temple and Ryozen Kannon before strolling along the Ninenzaka Path. See the Yasaka Pagoda, Gion Corner, and Hanamikoji Street, the center of geisha culture in Kyoto for centuries. Many of the buildings here are exclusive teahouses, or ochaya, and you might catch a glimpse of a geiko (Kyoto’s term for geisha) or a maiko heading to an evening engagement.
